How do Creationists explain this?

... if evolution didn't happen, why are there so many extinct intermediates between the oldest fossils and different modern living types? Indeed, why were any of these extinct forms created in the first place? There may be links missing, but why are there any links at all?

Just going on my interpretation of the Bible here. I understand it as , when God created the Earth, he placed animals and man upon the Earth in their adult form. If you think about it He couldn't have put infants here in the beginning, they never would have survived. He had to start with fully formed and functioning adult man, plants and animals. And He had to also make the Earth as a fully formed and functioning Earth. With fossils already in the ground, etc. Even evolutionists agree that there was a catastophic event (perhaps a flood) That caused many species to become extinct. The Bible does speak of giants in the land during biblical times. A flood would be the only way to explain fossils being found on the tops of mountains where there is no ocean or lakes for hundreds of miles. I like your question, instead of asking with an already "closed mind" , you truly are seeking an answer. Animals are still becoming extinct today. Though, with preservation, it is not as prevalent as it was. We have come to realize that we need to be aware of and protect all animals and not hunt them to extinction like was done before.
